A popular topic among mobile network operators around the world is VoLTE and IMS. The reasons for this is simple: Using VoLTE allows you to use your spectrum more efficiently while the overall total cost of the network is cheaper compared to 2G and 3G. In the recent years, we’ve been working hard on making Kamailio capable to support VoLTE & IMS on (not only) mobile networks. However, since Kamailio is “SIP only”, you will need other components in order to provide value added services or to simply connect to other networks. This is where Asterisk comes into the picture. In one of our recent deployments of VoLTE & IMS in a mobile network, we’ve replaced several components of our platform with the latest LTS release of Asterisk. In this talk, I will shed some light on the different use-cases where we use Asterisk in this project and why we had huge benefits from using Asterisk instead of other solutions. You will learn about the different use-cases, how to deploy them using Asterisk and why and where using Asterisk makes sense. Additionally, you will get an impression of the Architecture of VoLTE and mobile networks.
